Research Interests:

 • Prosodic control in neuromotor speech disorders
 • Acquisition of prosody in typically developing children
 • Design and development of human-computer interfaces
 • Assistive technology for teaching and learning language

Background:

Professor Patel founded and directs the Communication Analysis and Design Laboratory (CadLab), an interdisciplinary research group that conducts research along two broad themes: analysis of spoken communication and the design of novel human-computer communication interfaces. To bridge cross-disciplinary research and innovation, she recently founded Northeastern University’s Center for Speech Science and Technology. Rupal earned her Bachelor's in Psychology from the University of Calgary, and her Masters and Doctorate in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Toronto. She then completed her post-doctorate training in speech acoustics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was on the faculty in the Department of Biobehavioral Sciences at the Teachers College of Columbia University prior to joining Northeastern University in 2003. Rupal holds appointments in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders and the College of Computer and Information Science at Northeastern University as well as adjunct appointments in the Speech and Hearing Bioscience and Technology program at Harvard-MIT, Department of Psychiatry at University of Massachusetts and Haskins laboratory at Yale University.
